Greenwood boys golf qualifies for state meet

The Greenwood boys golf team is heading back to state.

The Eagles finished third at the Class 4A Upper State qualifier, shooting 296 at the Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster. Adam Knox led Greenwood with a 71, and he was followed by Josh Brown (74), Keegan Farmer (75), Cameron Addis (76) and Bryson McCurry (78).

“We needed to finish top eight, which we did, and we had a good score, which allows us to move on and we’ll build off this momentum and play next week,” Greenwood coach Chip Whitt said.

“One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to break 300, and we have done that consistently now, which feels good. There was a time not too long ago that 78 may have been our lowest score, and now, it’s a score that doesn’t qualify in our top four scores for the day, so that’s a good feeling.”

Greenwood finished behind first-place North Augusta (291) and Greenville (294). Riverside (301), Indian Land (304), Pickens (304), Eastside (308) and Aiken (310) round out the top eight Upper State teams that will compete at the Class 4A state meet, which starts May 13.

In Lower State, A.C. Flora, May River, Myrtle Beach, Lucy Beckham, Lugoff-Elgin, James Island, West Florence and Bluffton will also compete at state. The meet will be at Rose Hill Golf Club in Bluffton.

“The thing about our team is we’re deep,” Whitt said. “Our No. 5 guy today shot 74, and there were numerous teams that didn’t have a 74, so when we can go that deep, I think that’s our strength.

“No one on our team today would think that today was their best round. We need to go next week, put together two solid rounds from one through four, and I think we could have a chance.”
