Sylvia Jacobs Daughtry, 89, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2024. Born on November 3, 1934, in Columbia, South Carolina, Sylvia was the cherished daughter of the late Horace T. Jacobs and Clara Mae Jacobs.
Sylvia is survived by her beloved sons, William H. Daughtry and Robert B. Daughtry, who will forever cherish her memory. She was a proud and doting grandmother to Brianna Daughtry, Izzy Daughtry, Johnna Daughtry, Hayden Daughtry, and Cooper Daughtry. Sylvia also leaves behind her dear brother, John T. Jacobs, sister in law Catherine Daughtry, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Daughtry, her brothers, Hampton Jacobs, Larry Jacobs and brother in law VL Daughtry with whom she is now joyfully reunited.
Sylvia’s passion for education and her unwavering dedication to her students defined much of her life. She spent thirty-four years as an esteemed English teacher at Tucker High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Her commitment to fostering a love of literature and language in her students was evident in her innovative teaching methods and the personal interest she took in each student’s success. Sylvia’s classroom was a haven for learning, creativity, and growth, and her impact was felt deeply by all who had the privilege of being her students.
Beyond her professional achievements, Sylvia was a devout Christian and an active member of her church community. She taught Sunday School for many years, guiding young minds and hearts with the same dedication and passion she brought to her career. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength, hope, and a deep sense of purpose.
Sylvia was also a respected leader in her educational sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. Her involvement in the sorority allowed her to mentor other educators, share her expertise, and contribute to the advancement of women in education. Sylvia’s leadership and commitment to her sorority sisters were a testament to her generosity and her belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Despite being a native of South Carolina, Sylvia was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. Her enthusiasm for Georgia football was infectious, and she never missed an opportunity to cheer on her favorite team. Her love for the Bulldogs was a fun and spirited part of her life, shared with family and friends.
Sylvia’s family is honoring her wishes to be cremated. A memorial service celebrating her life and legacy will be held at Briar lake Baptist Church Chapel on Saturday, July 20 at 2:00PM with Dr. Steve Telis and Rev. Larry Sullivan officiating. Her loved ones will gather to remember her warmth, kindness, and the indelible mark she left on their lives.
Sylvia Jacobs Daughtry’s life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and dedication. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.
