Our Mother RosaLee Cratch, affectionately known as ‘Mother’ was born July 8th, 1929 to parents Nettie Thomas and Jerry Murray. Rose was adopted and raised by Martin and Minnie Rhodes.
As a child she was raised in church, and often worked in the field as well as cooked for her family. Rose was raised in church and singing on the choir, well known through life for her high soprano tone. She was raised with 6 brothers and 5 sisters, whom all except two proceeded her in death.
Rose received her education from the South Carolina school system. She became a young mother of two sons, James Lee Jenkins and Alexander Rhodes in South Carolina. She later moved to Philadelphia where she was a cook for many years at F.W. Woolworth until retiring in 1992. While living in Philadelphia she met and married John W. Swann. From this union there are four children Rose Marie, Minnie Mae, Geraldine , and baby boy John Swann Jr.
Mother continued to sing in the choir, her and her family went to church. In 1965 John Swann Sr. passed away. Mother met and later married Joseph Cratch. From this union there are two bonus children, Joyce and Preston. RosaLee and Joseph were together a long time, 54 years to be exact, married for 30 of those years before his health failed and Joseph’s passing in 2021.
Mother leaves to mourn one sister, Mary Weaver of Charlotte NC., and one brother, Charles Thomas (Fannie) of Queens New York. Sister in laws Christine of North Carolina, and Margaret of Rembert, South Carolina. Three children, Minnie and John aka W.J. ( Patricia) of Philadelphia and Geraldine of Rembert, SC., 16 Grandchildren, 18 great grands, 6 great great grands. A host of generations of nieces and nephews and one special cousin Desline Honor of Philadelphia. God has spoken let the people say Amen and Thank God.
