Christine Gathers Obituary

It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of Mrs. Christine H. Gathers.

Mrs. Christine H. Gathers was born on April 29, 1936 to the late Carolina Hollmon Sr. (Dobe) and Lillie Gridiron Hollmon (Peggy) in Boykin, South Carolina.  At an early age, while attending Good Hope United Methodist Church, Christine accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was called from labor to heavenly reward on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. 

Christine met and married the love of her life, the late Carolina (Boop) Gathers in 1954. She was a loving and devoted wife. She was also a loving and devoted, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Christine never met a stranger and opened her heart and her home to anyone that was in need.

Christine was active in Church as a young adult and continued her service to the Lord throughout her life. After joining Camden First United Methodist Church, she served in many capacities, to include being a member of the Mass Choir and Church Caretaker team. She remained a member and attended and served faithfully until her health no longer permitted her to do so. Christine was a full-time housewife for most of her life, as caring for her husband and children were her priority. In the 1980’s, she worked for Townsend Textron of Elgin, SC for several years prior to retirement. 

In addition to her parents, Carolina and Peggy Hollmon, her husband, Carolina Gathers, she was also preceded in death by her son Terry Gathers, two brothers: Robert Hollmon and Carolina Hollmon, Jr.; seven sisters: Letha Arthur, Nancy Belton, Elsie Johnson, Rosetta Hayes, Naomi Hollmon, Easter Salmond, and Geneva Hollmon.

Christine leaves to cherish her memories, three daughters, Carolyn Salmond (George), Susan Jeraline Workman (Joe), and Elsie Grace (George); two sons: Jerome Gathers and Johnnie Gathers (Kimberly) one sister- in-law: Dorothy Hollmon, ten grandchildren, Roosevelt (Eugenia)  Hollmon, Joyce (Toby) Brooks, Maurisa Salmond, Jakeil (Kitwana) Gathers, Ryan (Courtney) Workman, Victoria (Danielle) Gathers, Nacole Gathers, Johnathan Gathers, Maurice Gathers and Kendra Salmond; Thirteen great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Camden First United Methodist Church. The body will be place in the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Cedar Cemetery. Viewing will be held from 1:00 PM until 5:30 PM Monday at the funeral home.
