Obituary of Mattie Gertrude Catoe Ray
Mattie Gertrude Catoe Ray, 89, passed away on August 29, 2024. Born in Sumter, SC, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Cato and Laura Nunnery. She worked with her husband, Adolphus Ray at their family company, Dr. Tire in Columbia, SC. She enjoyed her animals, cooking, and was known for her famously delicious skillet prepared fried chicken. But above all else Mrs. Ray enjoyed being with her family.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Diane Juanita Dillon, Wayne Adolphus Ray (Charlene), Katherine Dorreene Felder (Carl), Rosemarie Sturkie (Dave), Judy Denise Currier (David); sister, Sally Thompson; brother, Willard Catoe; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Allie Mae Brown, Louise Watkins, Dot Nunnery, Harold Cato, Eva Walker, and Ginny Ballentine.
A funeral service for Mrs. Ray will be held Monday, September 09, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home. With burial to follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 08, 2024, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC. The Rev. Todd Horton will be officiating.
