Federal jury finds woman guilty of drug charges, smuggling contraband into South Carolina federal prison

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A former federal correctional officer in Williamsburg County has been found guilty of drug charges and smuggling contraband into a prison.

Jurors in U.S. District Court in Florence convicted Angela Crosland, 51, of Elgin, of bribery, money laundering, distribution of methamphetamine and suboxone, and filing false income tax returns after a two-day trial. Crosland worked at the Federal Correctional Institution Williamsburg in Salters.

She was indicted and pleaded not guilty in November 2023.

Prosecutors said Crosland smuggled contraband into FCI Williamsburg in exchange for money while she worked at between September 2021 and June 2023 while she worked at the prison.

The contraband included suboxone, meth, K-2-soaked paper, marijuana, tobacco, food, and other items, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Trial evidence included records from Crosland’s Cash App accounts, which reflected $56,791 in payments from family members and associates of inmates housed at FCI Williamsburg.

These payments occurred over approximately nine months, and she failed to report the income on her federal tax returns, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

“Those who work in public service, especially in law enforcement and corrections, must be held to a higher standard,” said U.S. Attorney Adair Ford Boroughs for the District of South Carolina. “Crosland’s actions damage trust in our prison systems while compromising the safety of Williamsburg FCI’s staff and inmates.”

Crosland will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Joseph Dawson III following a pre-sentencing report by the U.S. Probation Office.

“Crosland smuggled drugs and other contraband into the federal prison in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars in bribes,” said Eric Fehlman, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Southeast Region. “Her corrupt actions jeopardized the safety and security of the entire facility.”
