Cheryl passed away on February 8, 2025. She was born on August 11, 1953, to the late Alvin Wayne and Ruby Gardner Hunter.
A devoted and compassionate nurse, Cheryl dedicated her life to caring for others. She spent 34 years serving at Palmetto Health, where she was a Neonatal ICU nurse at Richland for over 20 years, providing tender care to the most fragile newborns. She later became the Director of Nursing for Education, Quality, and Infection Control, leading with wisdom and grace for over a decade. Cheryl’s excellence in nursing was recognized when she was awarded the prestigious Palmetto Gold in 2002, an honor given to RNs in South Carolina who exemplify outstanding dedication to their profession. She was also a 2005 Fellow of the Amy V. Cockcroft Leadership Fellowship through the University of South Carolina College of Nursing, a program for distinguished nurse leaders.
Beyond her career, Cheryl’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her nieces and nephews and took immense pride in their lives, always offering love, encouragement, and laughter. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she served as the pianist and later the organist at Hermitage Baptist Church in Camden, a gift she shared just as her beloved Aunt Myrtle had before her. Cheryl had a radiant smile that could light up a room and a laugh that was utterly contagious, bringing warmth and joy to all who knew her.
Cheryl is survived by her fiancé, Everett Twining of Chapin; sister, Darlene H. Love (Eddie) of Camden; brother, F. Wayne Hunter (Wanda) of Sumter; nieces, Christina Hunter, Sarah Malyerck, and Kelly Taylor; nephews, Trey Love and Evan Hunter; and eight great-nieces and nephews who adored their “Aunt Cheryl.”
