Douglas L. Amyx Obituary

Douglas L. Amyx, 86, long-time resident of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Born March 22, 1938, in Sanger, Texas, he was the son of the late Lois Marie Sullivan and Frank Brockman “Tide” Amyx. He was a 1956 graduate of Sanger High School, and a graduate of Cook County College, Gainesville, Texas, with a degree in Business Administration. He also attended the University of Texas, Arlington. He retired from Moore Business Forms, Inc. after 37 years.

He was a member of Greenwood Seventh Day Adventist Church and currently a member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church.

Doug was raised to Master Mason in 1960 in Bolivar Lodge No. 418 in Sanger, Texas, and served as Worshipful Master in 1968. He affiliated with Greenwood Lodge No. 91 in 1972 and served as Worshipful Master twice. Within the Grand Lodge of South Carolina, he served as Grand Steward in 2003-04, as District Deputy Grand Master of the 11th Masonic District in 2004-06, and as Grand Marshal in 2007-09. He was presented with the Albert Galatin Mackey Award in 2008. He was Past Patron of Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, in Greenwood, and received the Rob Morris Membership Jewel in 2002. He was Past Royal Patron, Rose Court No. 13, Order of the Amaranth, in Laurens, and served the Grand Court of South Carolina in various positions including Grand Commissioner of Appeals. He served as Chairman of the Greenwood Chapter Order of DeMolay Advisory Council and served as State Dad of the Palmetto DeMolay Association in 1982-83. He was honored as Advisor of the Year in 1982. He served on the Greenwood Assembly No. 33 Advisory Board, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and as a Grand Deputy, and was awarded the Grand Cross of Color in 1980.

Doug’s other Masonic affiliations and awards include: 33º Inspector General Honorary of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Greenville, and Past Wise Master of Greenville Chapter Rose Croix; Past Excellent High Priest of Greenwood Chapter No. 37 Royal Arch Masons, Past Illustrious Master of Maxwell Council No. 21 Royal and Select Masters, and Past Eminent Commander of Greenwood Commandery No. 5 Knights Templar; Past Grand Commander Knights Templar of South Carolina; Past Sovereign Master of George D. Bell Council No. 257, Allied Masonic Degrees; Life Member Palmetto York Rite College No. 70; Purple Cross from York Rite Sovereign College; Past Grand Tall Cedar of Georgia State Forest No. 181, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and charter member of Palmetto Forest No. 206; Noble of Hejaz Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Greenville, and a member of the Laurens Shrine Club; Life Member South Carolina Council No. 20, Knight Masons U.S.A.; member Palmetto Priory No. 54, Knights of the York Cross of Honour; Carolina Conclave Red Cross of Constantine; South Carolina College Masonic Societas Rosicruciana In Civitatibus Foederatis; member of the Royal Order of Scotland; charter member and Past Chancellor of Greenwood Lodge No. 56, Knights of Pythias; Life Member of Charleston Chapter No. 28, National Sojourners; Life Member of John Sevier Chapter No. 548, National Sojourners, and received the honor of Heroes of 76; and Cana Tabernacle No. XLIX, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Frances Gwendolyn Mays Amyx; his children Dedra (Dan) Hart of Hartsville, SC, Douglas K. (Sandi) Amyx of Greenwood, SC, Darrett (Brian Clark) Amyx of Atlanta, GA, Desiree’ (Joe) Jordan of Hood River, OR, Devlin (Rene) Amyx Sr. of Greenwood, SC, Denee’ (Eric) Hayes of Pittsburgh, PA, and special daughter Mandy (Herbie) Dixon of Greenwood, SC; grandchildren: Chelsi (Kyle) Friddle, Creighton Amyx, Sullivan (Keirnan Buddendeck) Mackintosh, Davis Mackintosh, Devyn (Reid) Dixon, DJ (Brittany Templeton) Amyx, and Elliott, Adelle, and Vivian Hayes; nine great grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirlene Theobald, five nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday with Masonic Rites to follow. The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rice Memorial Baptist Church. Honorary escorts will be members of Greenwood Lodge No. 91 AFM, Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter No. 1 OES, and Rose Court No. 13 Order of the Amaranth.

A burial will be held in Sanger Cemetery in Sanger, Texas.
