Four Berkeley County School District basketball teams were able to navigate their way through opening-round games in their respective playoffs, and four more squads received first-round byes in Class 5A by virtue of earning a top-four seed.
Cross’ boys, Philip Simmons’ boys and Goose Creek’s girls coasted in their first postseason games, while Hanahan’s girls won by single digits.
Junior Caden Ramsey powered the Cross Trojans with 24 points, and senior Preston Fuller added 16 points Monday, Feb. 17, during a 73-38 victory over visiting Hemingway in the Class A playoffs. Senior Micah Flute chipped in 11 points. Ramsey reached a double-double by grabbing 12 boards, and freshman Isaiah Wright made nine steals for the Trojans.
Cross improved to 14-2 with its ninth straight win.
Sophomore Hudson Hatch guided Philip Simmons’ boys with 18 points Tuesday, Feb. 18, while senior Corbin Driggers added 15 points in the Iron Horses’ 69-34 victory over visiting Lake City in the Class 2A playoffs. Senior Alondre Wright grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and Driggers made six steals for Philip Simmons.
The win was the 13th straight for the Iron Horses, who moved to 19-5.
Sophomore Bri Johnsen paced three Hanahan players in double figures with 14 points Monday, Feb. 17, while freshman Brianna Allen and senior Camdyn Lawson chipped in 10 points each during the Lady Hawks’ 45-38 win over visiting Fox Creek in the Class 3A playoffs.
Freshman Kaleigh Taylor and sophomore Elisea Meadows led Hanahan around the glass with seven rebounds apiece. Johnsen also made seven steals for the Lady Hawks, who upped their record to 15-8.
Goose Creek’s girls moved to 13-10 on the season with a 65-21 win over visiting Myrtle Beach in a Class 5A Div. II playoff game Monday, Feb. 17, at GCHS.
Both Berkeley squads, Goose Creek’s boys and Cane Bay’s boys, received first-round byes. After press time, all four began the playoffs.
