Elaine Newman “Haney” Hartis, age 99, of Bethune, S.C. passed away peacefully, Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Pinedale Residential Center where she had been a resident for the past 6 years. Mrs. Hartis dropped out of the 11th grade and moved to Charlotte, N.C. to make ammunition for the Federal Government during World War II. She met her future husband, Luther “June” Hartis and married him on June 23rd, 1946, in Charlotte, N.C., and later moved to Bethune, S.C. in 1953. She worked for the Kendall Co. in Bethune, S.C. prior to her retirement. Elaine was a true southern belle. She enjoyed attending church, shopping and eating out. She strived to make people laugh every day. Her favorite color was pink. If you desire, please wear something pink to her funeral in honor of her. Elaine cherished her last 6 years residing at Pinedale. The family would like to thank the staff of Pinedale for the love, kindness and outstanding care she received while she was a resident. She made many friends there that became her family.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory; 2 sons, Gene Hartis and Larry Hartis; her daughter, Cathy (Rex) Blackwell; 5 grandchildren, Tammie (Greg) Broughton, Susan Barks, Michael (April) Hartis, Sammy (Christina) Hartis and Nathan (Brittany) Hartis; 8 great grandchildren, Rae Ashlie (Dylan) Robinson, Mary Kelsie (Matthew) Mungo, Eric (Courtney) Broughton, Brenna Broughton, Sarah Barks, Alex Barks, Liam Hartis and Mason Hartis; 5 great-great grandchildren; her sister, Helen (Glenn Reed) Catoe; a number of special nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Jeff Newman, her special friend, Susan Martin and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Newman and Nannie McCaskill Newman; her husband, Luther “June” Hartis who passed away April 1, 2007; her son, Ray Hartis; her daughter-in-law, Faye Hartis and siblings, Alma Hilton, Susie Mae McGee, Sarah Anderson, Boyd Newman, Heyward Newman, Buster Newman, James D. Newman, Bill Newman, Grady Newman, Roy Newman and Nelson Newman.

The family will greet friends, Monday, March 10, 2025, immediately following the service in the Timrod Baptist Church Family Life Center.

A service to remember and celebrate her remarkable life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 10, 2025, in the sanctuary of Timrod Baptist Church, Bethune, S.C. The Revs. Jeremy Ussery, Jackie Knight and Joe Stines will officiate. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Alex Barks, Eric Broughton, Michael Hartis, Nathan Hartis, Sammy Hartis, Matthew Mungo, Jeff Newman and Dylan Robinson.

Memorial remembrances may be made to Timrod Baptist Church, 4227 Timrod Road, Bethune, S.C. 29009.

Arrangements are under the care of Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw, S.C.
