Evelyn Watkins Obituary

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, Evelyn Dupree Watkins was gathered into God’s eternal Kingdom.

There she was reunited with her husband Roy and her son, Michael.  Evelyn, born July 21, 1923, was the last of 8 siblings. She was the daughter of Charles Sumter and Bertha Brannon Peebles.  She was an avid reader and gardener.  Always ready for a good time, she enjoyed annual beach trips with her family and extended families.  She could pack a bag in 10 minutes if anyone said, “Would you like to go to…”

Evelyn worked for God through her church and community.  She held many offices in the church and taught Sunday school.  She represented the church at a number of annual state conferences.  Evelyn worked with the Family and Community leadership program and the Clemson Extension Home Demonstration program.  Some of her accomplishments were, chaired the Kershaw county food fair and the Camden Home and Garden show.  She represented the Midlands district for family and community leadership.

She was very active teaching classes in nutrition, health, flower arranging, and family living.  In 2016 her macular degeneration progressed to make it impossible for her to drive.  She left the farm in Cassatt and started a new journey in her life at the Foothills Retirement Community.  She served there on several committees and was instrumental in getting a reading machine for the library.  She enjoyed her new life by participating in the social and exercise programs.  Mrs. Watkins is survived by daughters and sons in law, Joel and Tom Moore of Easley and Pattie and Allen Jenkins of Laurens.  Grandchildren, Tia and Chris Moore, Nikie and Jamie Long, Jennifer Bridges.  Great grandchildren, Karlyn Moore, Hannah Long, Isaiah Parks, and Dupree Bridges.  There are 5 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Sandy Grove Community Church, 2845 Old Stagecoach Rd. on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 3:00 PM.  Rev. Barbara Segars will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall after the service.  Memorials may be made to Sandy Grove Community Church, PO  Box 275, Bethune, SC 29009.
