The Miller School of Albemarle (Va.) Mavericks got off to a fast start in the opening game of the 20th Annual Forest Acres Classic and never relented galloping away with a 16-0, three-inning win over the Cardinal Newman Cardinals Monday, April 14.

Noah Gray led the Mavericks going 2-for-3 from the plate with five RBI. Jackson Rosales went 2-for- 2 with four RBI, and Mandela Browman was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Evan Hankins was perfect from the mound pitching all three innings. He struck out three while allowing no hits and walks.

With two outs in the top of the first, pinch runner Dillon O’Connor scored from third on a passed ball, and then Rosales hit a double to right field plating Browman and John Michael Szefc for a 3-0 lead.

The Mavericks struck again with two outs, this time in the top half of the second inning, when Browman singled to center field. A Cardinal error on the single allowed Gray and O’Connor to score for a 5-0 lead.

Cardinal Newman went in order a second straight time to end the second inning, and then the Maverick bats exploded in the top of the third.

Three straight walks and a wild pitch made it a 6-0 game, and then Gray singled to left scoring Kason Wagner and Jack Warrington. Drew Lucy bunted to bring Will Tomlinson home and Gray scored on an error for a 10-0 lead. Connor Lockhart came home on a bases loaded walk, and then Rosales singled to right field scoring O’Connor and Browman to put Miller up 13-0. Gray batted again blasting a single to left field that brought Szefc, Rosales, and Tomlinson home for the 16-0 advantage.

Hankins ended the game forcing two groundouts and fanning his third Cardinal.

Cardinal Newman will face the Lexington Wildcats next. The Mavericks will battle the Lugoff-Elgin Demons.
