James Clifton, Jr. was called home on November 3, 2025, to be with the Lord. Born on June 16, 1938, in Kershaw County, South Carolina. James was a master craftsman, a brick mason who added not only support to the structures he built but also heart. Outside his professional life, James was a man who embraced the great outdoors. His love for sitting outside, hunting, fishing, and river visits were more than hobbies: they were his passions. He loved being one with nature, and he found immense peace in the tranquility that it offered. James had a unique way of cutting jokes that could lighten up even the gloomiest days. 

James is survived by his son, Avon Starling; sisters, Mary Hudson (Robert) and Lillie Carlos ; brother, Lathen Clifton; grandchildren, LaTonia Bennett (Janathan), LaTisha Morley (Julius), Frankie Samuel; great-grandchildren, Treshaun Samuel, JaQuan Samuel, Nehemiah Harris, Nickolas Kennedy, Jaida Kennedy, Sanai Samuel, Jordan Samuel, Frankie “Deuce” Samuel, Melanie Samuel, Saint Samuel; nephew, Roberto “Tony” Hudson (Alexia); niece, Sharon Stevens (Andrew). 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Mae Clifton; parents, James Sr. and Rosa Clifton; daughter, Angela Samuel; sister, Phyllis Clark and brother-in-law, Ernest Carlos.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Suzie, Mr. Cliftons caretaker, for all of her help during this difficult time. 

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Greenhill Baptist Church in Lugoff, SC. With burial to follow the service in the church cemetery. Mr. Clifton will be available for viewing one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Dr. C. L. McGriff will be officiating.
