A 2.0 magnitude earthquake was confirmed near Elgin on Nov. 28, marking the second tremor in a week and the third in November for South Carolina, according to authorities. The quake was recorded at 9:45 a.m. and rumbled a little more than 2 miles beneath the ground in Kershaw County, where more seismic activity has been recorded than any other location in the state since 2021. There have now been 35 confirmed earthquakes in South Carolina in 2025, compared to 30 last year. No major damage or injuries have been reported from the recent seismic activity. An explanation for the increased earthquake activity has eluded scientists, though some experts have theorized a link between the Wateree River and the earthquakes northeast of Columbia. Officials say they do not expect a significantly damaging earthquake in South Carolina at this time.
