
May 19, 1928 ~ November 9, 2015 (age 87)
Willie Salmond of Camden, South Carolina departed this earthly life on Monday, November 9, 2015 at Dorn Veterans’ Medical Center “Warriors Walk Ward,” a tribute of honor for his military service in the United States Army and final march of life. “Billo/Bill,” as he was affectionately called, was born on May 19, 1928, the first born of the late James and Dora James Salmond. He was also preceded in death by his wife Willie Mae. At a very young age, he joined Second Baptist(now Mt. Zion-Kirkwood) Church. He later joined the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Camden.
Billo graduated in the Class of 1947 from Jackson High School. He served in the Korean War from 1950 – 1952 and received an Honorable Discharge. Leaving Camden, he relocated to and lived in New York City for many years. He attended the Schick Tailoring School and mastered the art of stylish apparel. He was employed at the Brooklyn Law School, the Middletown School District, and the VIP Limousine Service. He was the Road Manager and friend of nationally acclaimed recording artist Brook Benton of Lugoff, SC.
Bill leaves to cherish his precious memory; a brother, Dr. Jasper (Thelma) Salmond of Columbia, SC; a son, William (Roxanne) Salmond of New York City; William’s mother, Mrs. Esther Travis of New York City; three grandchildren, Jamaal, Madinah (Tyrone Newsome) and Attorney Makedah Salmond all of New York City; a nephew, Rev. Jeryl (Kathy) Salmond and niece Jenita S. (Vanice) Belton of Columbia, SC; other nieces and nephews, as well as, a host of other loving family, friends and neighbors.
In lieu of floral sympathies, memorials may be sent to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 801 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020 and First Calvary Baptist Church, 1401 Pine Street, Columbia, SC 29204.
