With the exception of two roads, the one between Walterboro and Yemassee and the one between Westminster and Walhalla, the state routes are still passable though considerable damaged by recent rains, C. H. Moorefield, state highway engineer, stated at his offices in Columbia Saturday.
The roads in the lower part of the state are very muddy and rough but there is no immediate prospect of them becoming impassable, stated – Ambrose Harwell, maintenance engineer, Saturday after returning from a trip through the eastern part of the state. The Camden-Columbia road is rough and plans are being made to board part of it in a bad section just beyond Blaney. This road will be kept open if possible regardless of the weather, Mr. Harwell stated.
No immediate danger from high water in the wateree or Lynches rivers is threatening. The Waterboro-Yemassee road is the only road in this section impassable, due to higher water. Tourists traveling this road are advised to detour by way of Islandton and Varnville.
Repairs to the Westminster-Walhalla road in Oconee county, where a 3,000 foot fill was washed out, will be completed by next week is hoped.
