Another Highway Out of Condition

Walterboro – Yemassee Road in Bad Shape.

State highway No. 30, between Walterboro and Yemassee, is impassable, according to a telegram received yesterday morning at the state highway department – from W. E. Harris, Maintenance supervisor at Walterboro. Travelers should detour by Islandtown and Varnville, Mr. Harris advised.

The Westminster – Walhalla road in Oconee county is impassable, according to the latest reports given. The Walterboro – Yemassee road is the second that has been made impassable during the recent rainy period in so far as has been learned at the highway department.

Three and a half miles of the Columbia-Camden road above Blaney are very rough, however, and, according to H. H. Kester, central division maintenance engineer, will become impassable if rains continue. The detour of the Charleston-Columbia road in the northeastern part of Calhoun county is also very rough. Water had risen to within 13 inches of the top of the Columbia-Sumter road on the Sumter county side of the Wateree bridge, according to a report received at the highway department office.
