With Dreher in Olympia playing favored rivals away from home, the clash tomorrow night between Columbia high and Brookland-Cayce is expected to furnish Columbia scholastic football fans with their top grid encounter. It should do just that, with the Bearcats ready to roll after getting bumped by Chester in their opener and the Caps improving rapidly. The game will be played on Melton field and the kick off time is set for 8:15.
This afternoon on the Dentsville field. Dentsville and Blaney were set to start the ball game rolling at 3 o’clock in the first meeting of the two schools since before the war. A large crowd was anticipated for the game.
Tonight on the Olympia high field Columbia fans get to watch the chance number to watch nearby teams in action when Irmo and Lower Richland play. The game will mark the first time that either team has played under lights in the Columbia area, giving the public a chance to see them in action.
The contest appears to be close one, and the rivalry between the two schools is hot. Lower Richland lost to Bishopville in their opening game, but are improving rapidly.
Olympia embarked for Portsmouth this morning, minus the services of veteran stars declared in eligible and of W. J. Jeffcoat. The highest scoring Red Devils will be ranked underdogs against Wilson high, but were still optimistic about their chances. They were under dogs in Miami Beach last December.
Drafts Looking Good
Lit Durham was especially pleased with the recent showing of Franklin drafts, who is looking better every day and is being groomed, along with Jess Lowman, to take Jeffcoat’s place. The Red Devil backfield is still the fastest in the city, and Fred Carter may be out standing lineman.
Brookland-Cayce, still needing offensive push, will be pointing towards the middle of the Columbia line Friday night. The Bearcats forwards appeared able to outcharge the Caps, for they certainly outweigh them, but the backs are running too slow or much wide open running plays.
Caps’ Defense weak
Rhame’s worry at Columbia high was equally as great. Even Newberry, who the capitals trounced decisively often gained through the line. The Newberry touchdown came on a line buck after a half spinner.
But the Columbia high backfield may be the city’s best balanced. Buster Rhame is an excellent plunger and passer, while Benny Mac Evans, Brady Rye and Tommy Byars are fast enough to be constant breakaway threats. Rhame’s drop kicking touch should make PAT’s a cinch if the Caps can push into the double stripes.
Epworth Colorful
Epworth, still an unknown quality, is getting in last minute drills under coach Stanley Zuk. The light, fast orphanage team may have the most colorful in these parts, for Major Zuk plans to mix in all the rizzle-dazzle in the books with a T formation and a single wing. They play Greenbrier Saturday afternoon on the Epworth field.
Boys Meet Barnwell
Stan Nowak’s Columbia bees are prepping for their game tomorrow afternoon in Barnwell. Nowak announced that 50 candidates, more than went out for the Columbia high varsity, are out for the bees. Of these, 25 will go to Barnwell.
Hartsville vs. Conway
In Hartsville Skimp Harrison’s Red Foxes open their home season against Conway Friday night. Hartsville scored an 18 – 13 upset over Mullins’ class B champs in their first game.
Lake City Starts
Jack Schuyler’s Lake City griders open district elimination play with Macedonia. The Panthers took the district title last year, and Friday’s games should indicate their chances in ’47.
