A LETTER TO THE READERS

September 1, 1988 | State, The (Columbia, SC)Author: Thomas N. McLean, Executive Editor | Page: 1 | Section: NEIGHBORS 2

To Our Readers:

Today we welcome 2,000 families in the Lugoff-Elgin area as new readers of Northeast Neighbors, our weekly newspaper.

We are expanding our coverage and distributing Neighbors to give you more news about the people, churches and schools in your community. You will receive Neighbors each Thursday along with your morning newspaper. (There will be no additional cost to you.)

You will be part of a community newspaper that focuses its energy on one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in South Carolina. Our inclusion of Elgin and Lugoff is a natural extension of the dynamic development along U.S. 1 and I-20.

Some of you are long-time residents who still refuse to call it “Elgin”. You prefer the old name, Blaney. (Community Editor Jennifer Nicholson writes about the history of the name switch elsewhere on this page.) Many newcomers now call Elgin or Lugoff home. You like the quiet countryside, but you also like its proximity to the bustling shops and entertainment offered by Columbia Mall and Richland Northeast merchants. Quite a few families were attracted by Dana, Marcor, Sabre Textron and other new industries which are springing up amidst the loblollies and scrub oaks.

A common attraction to most families is the good school system: Blaney and Lugoff elementary, Lugoff-Elgin Middle School and Lugoff-Elgin High School. Neighbors will pay a lot of attention to the students, teachers and parents who make “good schools”. We will be writing about Dave Fuller, president of the Lugoff-Elgin Band Booster Club, and tell you how he spearheaded recent efforts of parents to build a $25,000 concession stand for the football stadium. When teachers tell us about achievements of your sons and daughters, your friends will also read about it in your Neighbors.

Today, you will find stories about Herbert Boykin’s love of Studebakers and Jerry Hall’s affinity for “mudbogging”. On our sports page, you will read about the prospects for this year’s Lugoff-Elgin High School football team as well as about some former players now in college. We’ll also take a look at the girls cross-country team’s quest for a state championship.

We would like to hear your ideas and suggestions. Do you have a neighbor with an interesting hobby? Know someone who has worked particularly hard for your church project? Write Jennifer Nicholson or Paul Osmundson: c/ o Neighbors, P.O. Box 1333, Columbia, S.C. 29202. You can also call us on this toll-free line: 1-800-768-2626, extension 8440.

If you are not a subscriber and you would like to receive Neighbors each week, along with The State daily, call Harry Davis in our circulation office. If you are on a Columbia exchange, his number is 771-8425. If you are on a Lugoff-Elgin exchange, the toll-free number is: 1-800-768-4848.
