GASTON – Services for James Grisby McLendon Sr., 77, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2006, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, with entombment in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, officiated by Pastor Ralph Hanahan, Rev. Gary Farmer and Pastor Fred England. The family will receive friends from 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2006, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 110, Columbia, SC 29204 or the Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC 29203.

Mr. McLendon passed away September 19, 2006. Born March 21, 1929, in Blaney, he was the son of the late George Tillman McLendon and Ola Rose Watts McLendon. He was a member of Midlands Community Church of God, Seventh Day and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. In 1963, he opened and operated a lady’s dress and shoe store. After 30 years of service, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. McLendon helped people improve their personal and financial lives and enjoyed working with many different community groups, especially Crime Watch.

Mr. McLendon is survived by his wife, Carol McLendon of Gaston; sons, David (Rita) McLendon of Irmo and Jamey (Cathy) McLendon of West Columbia; stepchildren, Ramone Bowman of North, Greta Blakely, Gail Greenthaler, Andrew Greenthaler, all of Gaston and Ray Greenthaler of Gilbert; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Ola Beatrice (Larry) Craft of Southern Pines, NC, and Charlotte Ophelia (Isidaro) Delgado of Los Cruses, NM.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Higbe McLendon; sister and brother-in-law, Selma Mae Beck and James Beck; sister, Louise McLendon and brother and sister-in-law, Jessie J. “Happy” McLendon (Nadine Summer).
