Where PReachers of South Carolina Methodist Conference (Negro) Are Sent.
(By I. E. Lowery.)
Sumter, Nov. 29 (Special) – Sunday was a great day here at the seat of the conference. Five services were crowded into a short November day. The day began with the annual conference love feast, which was largely attended, and, from beginning to end, was characterized with great religious fervor and with frequent outburst of spiritual enthusiasm. This service was followed by the ordination of a large class of deacon and elders. After this, the bishop preached a masterly sermon from St. Mark 10:21; “Then Jesus, beholding him, loved him.” In the afternoon memorial services were held in honor of those heroes of the Cross who had fallen during the past year. The number was five, in addition one minister lost his wife. At night the anniversary of the home missionary and church extension society took place.
On Monday just before the bishop read the appointments he sprung a surprise on the conference. He told them that after careful study of the the question and after due consideration of the same, that he could not get the consent of his mind to concur with the conference in reference to its division. This statement was like a bomb thrown into the camp of those who thought that they had conquered. For a moment there was confusion among the ministers. Then resolutions were offered and passed carrying the fight to the general conference, which convenes in Minneapolis, Minn., in May 1912.
The conference voted to meet next year in Anderson. The conference treasurer reported that something over $18,000 was raised during the year for benevolent purpose. This includes missions, church extension, and education.
