On September 9, 1918, John Daniel Motley (35), of Blaney, Kershaw County, South Carolina, registered for the World War 1 draft. He gave farming for himself as his occupation. His description was listed as tall in height, medium build, brown eyes, black hair.

1930 Census Information:
According to the United States Census reported on May 1, 1930, John D Matley (45) owned a home in Wateree township, Kershaw County, South Carolina with his wife of a year, Jessie M. Matley (18). They reported that he was first married at 21, and she was first married at 18. Also in the home was John D’s children from his previous marriage; Buck O Matley (11), Talmadge C Matley (9), and Evelyn P Matley (6), his child with Jessie; Iva M Matley (1). All family members were born in South Carolina. John D was a farmer on a general farm.
1930
Funeral service for John Daniel Motley, 47, who died at his residence in Blaney, Monday afternoon, December 29, 1930, after an illness of only a four hours (his death certificate list the cause of death as a cerebral hemorrhage), will be held at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 31, 1930, from the Union Chapel Baptist church, Blaney, conducted by Rev. Mr. Willis, pastor, of Ridgeway. Interment will be in the churchyard.
Pallbearers at the funeral will be: W. B. Evans, J. D. Watson, T. B. Branham, J. D. Bailey, B. W. Braziel and Blake Branham.
Mr. Motley had made his home in Blaney for the past four years and was a member of Union Baptist church. He leaves numerous friends in various sections of the state who will be grieved to hear of his sudden death.
He is survived by his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Jessie Mae Heath of Blaney; two sons, Buck Motley and Talmadge Motley; two daughter, Evelyn and Mae Motley; one sister, Mrs. W. R. Laughlin of Columbia; and two brothers, S. D. Motley of New Brookland and B. M. Motley of Columbia.
