An Elgin woman’s lawsuit against a town council member and a convenience store has been settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, court officials say.
The suit was brought early last year by Lynn Fernandez against Loretta V. Carr, a member of Elgin town Council, and pantry food store.
The complaint asked $110,000 in damages.
H. W. Carrol Furman, attorney for Ms. Fernandez, said the suit was settled for an undisclosed some to be paid by the store.
In the suit, Ms. Fernandez claimed that Ms. Carr caused her to lose her job as a clerk at the pantry food store on Main Street in Elgin.
The suit alleged Ms. Carr went to the store and asked that Ms. Fernandez be fired because, during working hours at the store, the clerk had been soliciting signatures on a petition concerning the hiring of a second policemen by the town.
Ms. Fernandez, a resident of the Blaney West subdivision near Elgin, claimed she was fired although her actions were not in violation of company rules.
She also claimed the firing deprived her of her right to free speech.
