Watchman Hit; Three Agencies Probe Attack

Three agencies are investigating an attack made on a watchman who frightened a robber attempting to break in the Gus Ward restaurant, located about half way between Lugoff and Blaney in Kershaw county.

A white man had rented a tourist cottage near the restaurant and struck the watchman, who was preparing to start a fire. The watchmen was rendered unconscious and the intruder removed a window glass from the restaurant in attempt to gain entrance.

By the time, the watchman recovered consciousness and opened fire on the would-be robber, frightening him from the premises. The watchman required hospital treatment after the incident.

Sheriff J. H. McLeod is investigating the case for Kershaw county.

L. B. Shealy of the governor’s office and Assistant Investigator J. W. Richardson of the state patrol yesterday morning visited the scene of the attack and gathered evidence.
