John ‘Gary’ Paschal plans incomplete

John “Gary” Paschal, 86, of 619 King St., died yesterday at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, Va.

Funeral Plans will be announced by Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Born in the Blaney community in northwestern Richland County, he was a son of the late John Paschal and Mary Elizabeth Mattox Paschal.

Mr. Paschal, a retired attorney, was elected to Columbia City Council in 1932 and served for 12 years. He also was an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1934 and 1936 when he was defeated by incumbent Wade Hampton Fulmer.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6, the Columbia Lions Club and Masonic Lodge No. 325.

Mr. Paschal attended Newberry fitting school and joined the Mr. Paschal attended Newberry fitting school and joined the National Guard in 1916, serving as a scout under Gen. Pershing in his search for Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. During World War I he joined the Navy and served on a destroyer based in Ireland.

Later he became a soldier of fortune in Central America and fought in wars in five Central American countries.

After graduating from the University of South Carolina law school in 1926 he became magistrate in Olympia. He was married to the former Eugenia Adams, a teacher, for 52 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Jean) Shivel of Williamsburg, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services Thursday for ‘Gary’ Paschal

Services for John “Gary” Paschal, retired lawyer and former Columbia city councilman, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 1981, in Greenlaw Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. William B. Kyzer.

Mr. Paschal, 86, who served with Gen. John J. Pershing in Mexico and later with the Navy in World War I, died Monday.
