John Spencer Hicks, Sr. was born July 3, 1942, in Alamance County, N.C., the son of James LeGrand Hicks, Sr. and Annie Opal Ring Hicks.

On June 14, 1964, John Spencer Hicks married Mallie Lou Hancock in Moore, North Carolina.

2021

ELGIN –Graveside service for John Spencer Hicks, Sr., 78, will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.  A public viewing on Tuesday 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff   Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church or the Shriners Hospital.

Mr. Hicks passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021.  Born in Alamance County, N.C., he was the son of the late James LeGrand Hicks, Sr. and Annie Opal Ring Hicks. He retired from the United States Army after 24 years of service and served in the Vietnam War.  He taught JROTC for Camden High School for 20 years. 

Mr. Hicks was a Mason and a member of York Rites and the Jamil Shrine.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 195, MVETS, and Patriot Guard #295.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles, reading and camping.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Eileen Grubbs Hicks; sons, James Albert Hicks (Missy) of Elgin, John Spencer Hicks, Jr. (Melissa) of Prosperity and William Douglas Brazell (Cyndi) of Easley, S.C.; brother, Billy Hicks; sister, Molly Susan Vernon 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by sister, Joanne Eanes; and brother, James LeGrand Hicks, Jr.
