Students Will Contend in Debate, Oratory and Athletics, April 21-23
High schools from all parts of South Carolina will meet at Columbia, under the auspices of the extension department of the University of South Carolina on April 21, 22, 23. This year promises to see the biggest and most enthusiastic of these meets since they were inaugurated several years ago.
On the night of April 21 the finals in the debating contest will be held. On the next day and evening there will be oratorical and declamation contests. On April 23, the last day, the annual high school track meets will take place. Many schools will be represented in the several activities.
Preliminaries in the debates are being held through the country, a number in the first rounds having been held Friday of the past week. Reports obtained so far as follows:
District No. 1 – Walhalla defcated Easley; Woodruff and Faffney won by default over their respective opponents; Rock Hill Defeated Kersahw; Abbeville and Iva have not yet debated; Newberry defeats Laurens; Clinton and Ridgeway, tied, and both eliminated; Cedar Springs defeats Jonesville; no reports from Greenwood and McCormick; Anderson and Greenville to debate yet.
District No. 2 – No report from Blythewood and Blaney; Hyatt Park defeats New Brookland; Camden Defeats Columbia; Kershaw defeats Rock Hill; Pinewood, Cheraw, Bennettsville, Kingstree and Sumter won by default from respective opponents; Clio won from Latta; Dillon won from Timmonsville.
District No. 3 – Leesville and Batesburg won by default; Beaufort defeats Ridgeland; Estill defeats Barnwell; Walterboro and Summerville tied and eliminated.
The probable arrangement for the second rounds fo debate will be as follows: Beaufort vs. Batesburg; St. Matthews vs. Pinewood; Kingstree vs. Sumter; Camden vs. Kershaw; Dillon vs. Bennettsville; Clio vs. Cheraw; Gaffney vs. Cedar Springs: Newberry vs. Woodruff; Walhalla;s opponent to be decided; Hyatt Park vs. Leesville.
