Weekend Traffic Claims Six Persons In State

Weekend accidents killed at least six people in South Carolina, with five of those deaths on the highway, and one due to drowning.

A Cherokee County youth, David Littlejohn Jr., 22, of Jonesville, drowned about 3 p.m. Sunday while swimming with relatives in the Thicketty Creek eight miles east of Gaffney.

The youth went under, and his swimming companions were unable to save him, officials said.

The highway patrol reports at least five people killed in traffic accidents.

The latest victim was Marion Brown Sr., 45, of Wedgefield, who died when his car hit a tree about 10 a.m. Sunday on a secondary road in Sumter County.

Two men died in accidents before dawn Sunday. Leon Miller Talley, 39, of Travelers Rest, died in an accident at 1:30 a.m. when his car struck a parked car in Greenville County.

Steven B. Campbell, 25, of Elgin, died when his car collided head-on with another car at 3:00 a.m. on U. S. 378 east of Lake City in Florence County.

Motorcycle accidents killed two people Friday night. Officials said Henry Thomas Shorter, 22, of Cayce, died when his motorcycle collided with a car on U.S. 1 near Columbia; and Cecil Clippard, 65, of Greenville, died when his moped hit a truck on a state road in Greenville.

A Liberty man, Thomas Freeman Perry, 50, was also killed in a motorcycle accident, but that occured Friday before the start of the UPI weekend accidental death toll at 6 p.m.

The count ended at midnight Sunday.
