From Staff amd Wire Reports

At least six people have died in weekend accidents across South Carolina, including a North Carolina man who died Saturday in a fiery single-car wreck near Gaffney.

State troopers said Eddie Mullinax, 20, of Boiling Springs, N. C., died about 9:15 a.m. when his car left a secondary road, hit a tree and burned eight miles north of Gaffney.

The victim, whose wife was following him in another car, was pronounced dead at the scene. It took about an hour to remove the body from the burned vehicle, and authorities said they weren’t sure if Mullinax died on impact or in the fire.

An elderly Orangeburg County man was killed as he tried to flee a car that stalled on railroad tracks, and two other people died in wrecks early Saturday.

State troopers said Sonya Kay Geddings, 21, of Columbia died at about 12:10 a.m. in a two-car collision on U. S. 76 East, 5.2 miles east of her hometown.

Troopers said Stanley J. Polaski Jr., 44, of Lexington, died at 2:55 a.m. when the pickup truck he was driving left S.C. 6 and hit a pole 2.2 miles west of Swansea in Lexington County.

Authorities said Hubert Charley, 74, of the North, was about 30 feet from his stalled car when a Seaboard Systems freight train smashed into it. The car was knocked into Charley, hurling him another 25 feet.

The accident occurred at 7:40 p.m. Friday, just outside the town limits. Orangeburg County Coroner Paul Simmons said the death would be ruled an accident. No one else was injured.

Also Friday, a 27-year-old Florence County man died when his car went off a secondary road about 16 miles south of Florence, said Coroner Jimmy Gregg.

Jerry Lee of Effingham died in the 11:30 p.m. accident, Gregg said. He said Lee, who was driving the car in which his younger brother was a passenger, apparently lost control as he rounded a curve.

Gregg said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Greenville teenager died Saturday when he fell from a pickup truck. Kenneth Marshall, 16, died at 4 p.m. in the accident that occurred east of S.C. 291 in Greenville County.
