Dead Victims of Auto Wreck Identified

The women who were killed early today in an automobile-truck collision at the intersection of Colonial dive and U. S. Highway 21 have been identified as Mrs. Frances Arnold Derrick, age not known, and Mrs. Marion Elizabeth (Betty) St. John, 23.

Both are from Columbia. Mrs. St. John’s address was given at 301 Rice street, and Mrs. Derrick’s last known address was given at 811 Main street.

Two men in the automobile with the women were identified as George Derrick, no kin to Mrs. Derrick, and Mikell Patrick, both of Columbia. They were taken to Columbia hospital for emergency treatment.

Hospital attendants said this morning that Derrick, whose address is T-9, Gonzales Gardens, is still in a critical condition. He received a possible skull Fracture, lacerations about the head, a fracture of the shoulder blade, a fractured left leg, and a fracture of the jaw.

Patrick, of 416 Waccamaw avenue, was listed as “serious.” He sustained face injuries, a fractured jaw, a cut on his tongue, and a number of teeth knocked out.

Investigating officers said the automobile collided head-on with a larger trailer truck drived by Ralph Simmons of Winston-Salem, N. C. Simmons was unhurt in the accident.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight when the 1928 Cadillac occupied by the two men and two women smashed head-on into the truck. Simmons, the truck driver, was quoted as saying he swerved his truck to the left of the highway when he saw that the automobile was about to make a left turn into Colonial drive, which forms a “Y” With highway 21 at the intersection. He said the automobile also cut to that side of the Road and the result was a head-on collision.

Coroner William A. Plott said this morning that an inquest will be held later pending further investigation.

Investigating officers were Sgt. L. G. Small and Patrolmen D. B. Hallman and W. O. Wilson, all of the State Highway Patrol.

Mrs. Frances Arnold Derrick was the wife of Murdock Derrick of Lexington, and daughter of John D. Arnold and Mrs. Arlivia Teasley Arnold.

Survivors, besides her husband, are three sisters, Mrs. Lucile Roberts of Chester, Mrs. Inez Johns of Charlotte, N. C., and Mrs. Beatrice Harmon of Winnsboro; and two brothers, Jack Teasley of West Columbia and Glenn Teasley of Youngstown, OH.

Her funeral will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Lexington Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. J. L. J. Hiers, pastor, and the Rev. Raymond L. Holroyd, Jr., pastor of the Lexington Methodist church. The body will remain at the Sale funeral home until the services.

Mrs. Marion Elizabeth (Betty) St. John, 23, of Columbia is survived by her husband, Edward St. John of Alexandra, Ky.; her father, R. C. Bradley of Trilby, Fla., her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Barber (Flora A Kirby Bradley Barber) of Columbia; two sisters, Miss Annette Barber and Mrs. Clyde C. Fetner, both of Columbia; a brother, Cpl. Melton R. Bradley of Camp Gordon, Ga.; and adopted brother, Mickey Carter of Columbia; a grandfather, A. A. Kirby of Leesville; and a grandmother, Mrs. John W. Bradley of Blaney.

Funeral plans are incomplete. The body is at the Thompson Funeral home.
