Fort Jackson today observed S-D Day by presenting 60 safety driver awards to civilian employes.
Maj. Gen. R. F. Ennis, Fort Jackson and 101st Airborne Division Commander, Gave out the certificates assisted by Col. Ashford T. Jordan, Post Transportation officer.
For the presentation Gen. Ennis congratulated the 60 employes and told them “a man sitting behind a wheel is behind a gun. People do not realize what a dangerous weapon they hold in their hands. We are mighty proud of you all. You are as much a part of Fort Jackson as the enlisted men and the officers.”
Among the 60 employees receiving awards, 34 of them had a four-year accident free safety record; 12 had a three-year record; eight had a two-year record; five had a one year record and two a six month record.
Before the presentation Fort Jackson officials inspected Atlantic Greyhounds new coach Scenicruiser, which is on display at the bus station today.

Receiving one year awards were Thomas R. Bostic of Eastover, Obie M. Ellis of Cayce, Everett C. Charles Martin of 2007 Pulaski St., Eugene Sharpe of Colony Forrest and Cornelia F. Wade of 613 Maple St.
The six month awards went to Jeff Gilmore of 401 Christian St. and George A. Taylor of Lexington.
