Blaney Seeks Doctor, Cinema, Central School

Blaney, Jan. 6 – (Special) – The village of Blaney, located on U. S. Highway No. 1, 12 miles from Camden and 18 from Columbia, is having growing pains.

Right now the village is looking for a doctor, also a drug store a motion picture theater and a centralized high school. The latter would be located on U. S. Highway No. 1 between Blaney and Lugoff.

Residents of Blaney point out that if they require a doctor, they must summon one from either Camden or Columbia. If they must get a prescription filled, they must drive to Camden or Columbia. If the want to go to a picture show, the same situation prevails.

A prominent industrialist of the thriving community points out that the Wateree township, or Blaney trade area, lists about 3,000 people and this number would assure a doctor, a drugguest, a picture theater and good returns.

Blaney is just completing a new high school gymnasium building which will be used for community gathering as well as sport features.

“We need a doctor here in Blaney” said one prominent citizen. I know a property owner who is ready to build a drug store that would have a doctors office in connection. This same party is also prepared to build a dwelling to house a doctor and his family.

Relative to a motion picture theater it was pointed out that the Wayside theater in Lugoff, a drive-in affair, is the nearest to Blaney and that has been a success. A small movie in Blaney itself, would receive fine support, it was pointed out.

Regarding a centralized high school for the youth living west of the Wateree river, it was pointed out that such a program will have to be developed, since the Camden schools are already overcrowded.
