Dowey Final Rites Held At Pine Grove

LUGOFF, Jan. 31 – Funeral services for Adolphus Dowey, 48, were to be held at 3 p.m. today at Pine Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John D. Atkerson, with interment in the Pine church cemetery.

Mr. Dowey, a merchant of this section, died at his home yesterday after an illness of several months.

He was a native of Lugoff, a son of Mrs. Cecelia Watts Dowey and the late Woodward Dowey. He served for some years as magistrate of the West Wateree township of Kershaw County and was a trustee of the Blaney schools at the time of his death. For the past three years he had been an instructor in the veterans farm training program. He was a deacon of Pine Grove church and a member of Kershaw Masonic lodge No. 29.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Meleta Branham Dowey; two daughters, Mrs. Dan McCaskill and Miss Lillie Belle Dowey of Lugoff; his mother; five brothers, Ernest Dowey, Arthur Dowey, Milton Dowey and Alex Dowey of Lugoff, and Woodward Dowey of Columbia; four sisters, Mrs. English Rabon, Mrs. Etta Jackson, Mrs. Lela Ola Kronman, and one granddaughter, Deborah Lynn McCaskill.

Adolphus Dowey Dies at Lugoff

Lugoff, Jan. 30 – Adolphus Dowey, 48, prominent merchant of the Salt Pond community West Wateree, Kershaw county, died at his residence at 9:30 this morning following a few months illness.

Mr. Dowey was born July 21, 1903, near Lugoff, the son of Mrs. Cecelia Watts Dowey and the late Woodward Dowey. Mr. Dowey had spent his entire life in this community and was active in all civic affairs, serving as magistrate of the West Wateree community, and presently serving on the board of trustees of the Blaney Schools. For the past three years he was an instructor of the veterans farm training program.

Mrs. Dowey was an active Mason being a member of Kershaw lodge No. 29 and a deacon of the Pine Grove Baptist church, where funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon with the Rev. J. D. Adkerson officiating. Interment will be in the Pine Grove cemetery.

Mr. Dowey is survived by his his widow, Mrs. Meleta Branham Dowey; two daughters, Mrs. Dan McCaskill and Miss Lillie Belle Dowey of Lugoff; his mother; five brothers, Ernest Dowey, Arthur Dowey, Milton Dowey and Alex Dowey of Lugoff, and Woodward Dowey of Columbia; four sisters, Mrs. English Rabon, Mrs. Etta Jackson, Mrs. Lela Ola Kronman, and one granddaughter, Deborah Lynn McCaskill.
