Low bids received by the state highway department on the projects for highway construction on which bids were opened at the departmental offices in the state office building Thursday were announced at the offices of the chief commissioner, Ben M. Sawyer, Saturday.
The largest contract on which bids were received, and the only hard surfacing project in the lot of 17 listed, was that for the pavement of 6,972 miles of Route 2 in Oconee county. This road will extend from the pavement out of Seneca to Walhalla, and two separate to sets of bids were received, based on the type of hard surfacing proposed.
Low bidders on this project under the first alternate were P. R. Ashby and company, Laurinburg, N. C., at $220,534.45; and second low bidders were the Simons-Mayrant company, Charleston, at $221,221.90. Under the second alternate specifications, the Ballenger Paving company of Greenville offered by Slattery and Henry, also of Greenville, with $199,502.76.
The other projects and the low bids submitted on each were as follows:
Aiken country: for the Construction of 6.178 miles of Route 121, beginning at Wagener and extending to Horsey’s bridge: low bidder, J. L. Carroll, Columbia, $48,076.13; second low bidders, Ago Construction company, Mt. Gilead, N. C., $50,430.12.
Clarendon county: for the construction of 8.521 miles of Routes 4 and 30, beginning at the end of Project 252 and extending to Summerton; low bid, $75,874.42, Killian and Watson, Hickory, N. C.; second low bid, Mayfield Construction company, Denmark, $77,266.34.
Clarendon county: for the construction of a treated timber bridge of eight 15 foot spans: A. V. Hooks, Charlotte, N. C., $4,616.07; second, Palmer Construction company, Florence, $4,672.62.
Edgefield county; for the construction of a reinforced concrete and steel bridge over Turkey creek on Route 21, two contracts proposed: Contract 1; R. G. Kennedy, Batesburg, low bidder, $13,627.57; second low bidder, $13,627.57; second low bidder, Southern Concrete Products company, Andehson, $14,087.15. Contracts 2; low bid, $13,613.15 by the Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works, Roanoke, Va; second low bid, $13,702.70 by the Atlantic Bridge company, Greensboro, N. C.
Fairfield county; for the construction of 3.38 miles of Route 22, beginning at the end of Project S-627-B and extending toward Great Falls: Harrison, Walters, and Prater, White Pine, Tenn., $38,306.17; second, W. B. Boyle company, Sumter, $41,686.94.
Fairfield county; for the construction of a triple 12 by 12 culvert, a triple 10 by 12 culvert, and a reinforced concrete bridge over Wateree creek; W. B. Boyle company, Sumter, $30,924.75; Lathan brothers, Lancaster, $31,054.82.
Fairfield county; for the construction of 6.77 miles of Route 2, beginning at Strothers and extending to Salem Cross Roads: Cherokee Construction company, Blacksburg, $54,385.35; Davis-McGee Mule company, Anderson, $57,302.02.
Fairfield county; for the construction of 7.98 miles of Route 161, beginning at Salem Cross Roads and extending to Station 420.00; Cherokee Construction company, Blackburg, $79,149.37; W. C. McCoy, LaFayette, Ala., $80, 319.08.

Orangeburg county; for the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge of three 22 foot spans at Station 552; George B. Dean, Spartanburg, $5,736.18; Obenshain and Kennerly, Orangeburg, $6,554.62.
More than 250 contractors or their representatives were present at the bid opening Thursday, and the address of the various low bidders named in the foregoing tabulation is evidence of the fide secaion of the Southeast from which contractors were attracted by the opening.
