At Columbia College

By Margie Faucett

“Isn’t it fun?” Gee, if I had my high school days to live over!! Imagine forty children all talking at once – plus bewildered looks and several heartfelt sighs perfectly describe about fifty Columbia College seniors as they come back to college after being “loaned out” during the day to the Columbia City school system.

The girls who are planning to be teacher in the future will spend the next six weeks in the classroom, first in observation, and later actually practice teaching. This is a requirement of all students making applications for South Carolina teacher’s certificates. Although this means getting up a bit earlier and finishing up a bit later in the afternoon, the girls are really taking it as “all in a day’s work.” They’re serious about wanting to learn the business of teaching school, but they’re having fun at it, too!!

“Ice Vogues of 1950” being staged this week at the auditorium are highly commended by students from the college who have been ushering for most performances.

Chi Beta Phi, national honorary science fraternity, recently initiated Agnes Shuler of Holly Hill, Jackie Ginn of Gifford and Sarah Cooke of Kershaw into the organization. The service was held in the college parlors and was presided over by Louise Northey of Leesville, president and was assisted by Dorothy Shuler of Columbia.

Columbia College students ushering at the Friday night performance of “Two Blind Mice” at the Town Theater were Carolyn Felder of North, Betty Jane Lefler of Newberry, Mary Williams of Florence, Mary Lesene Graham of Loris, Ruth Keaton, of Canford, N. J. and Naomi Williams of Hemingway.

The new semester officially began on Wednesday, February 1, 1950. New students registering for the term were Laura Harrison of Trenton and Ollie Dixon of Blaney. Registered as a special student in the department of education is Libby Danner of Georgetown, a graduate of 1949.

In the physical education department, attention is being directed toward spring basketball practice. Plans are underway for a tournament to be held at a later date between the four classes to determine class championship in the sport.

Even through graduation may seem far away, preparations are beginning to be made for it by senior class members. At a recent class meeting at which Sue McMillan of Conway class president presided, orders for commencements were placed.

Among those visiting on the campus this past weekend were Lott Woods of Florence, Faye Stewart of Lynchburg, and Margaret DuRant of Mullins.

The Bachelor’s Club dance to be held this Friday evening at the Jefferson Hotel will be attended by Mary Risher and Marion Moye.
