LEXINGTON – Services for Rev. Douglas Phillip Blackwell, 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Northside Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Stephen Gantt and Dr. Lonnie Shull, with burial in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Rev. Blackwell died Tuesday, March 11, 2003. Born in Spartanburg County, May 11, 1920, he was the son of the late J. Ezra Blackwell and Effie Hall Blackwell. Formerly of Inman, he had been a local area resident since 1950. He was a decorated veteran of World War II and received numerous medals including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He recently received the Victory Medal from France for having participated in the liberation of that country during World War II. Rev. Blackwell received his education from Gardner Webb College, Furman University and Southeastern Seminary. He also attended Penn State University, receiving a degree in Fire and Casualty Insurance. Rev. Blackwell was a minister and a Christian businessman. He served pastorates in N.C. and S.C. before becoming director of Missions for Lexington Baptist Association. He served as director of Public Relations and Program Services for the General Board of the S.C. Baptist Convention as well as executive vice president of Southern Mutual Church Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1985. During the last 30 years of his ministry, Rev. Blackwell served 45 churches as interim pastor, some as many as three times. He served on the Nominating Committee for the S.C. State Baptist Convention as well as the Time, Place and Preacher Committee. He served four five-year terms as trustee of “The Baptist Courier,” two three-year terms as director of “The Brookland Plantation Home for Boys” and one term as district chaplain for the American Legion. He was a former member of the Rotary and Optimist Clubs and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served on numerous committees in the Lexington Baptist Association such as Vice Moderator, Stewardship, Budget, Long Range Planning, Missions, Personnel and Application for Aid. He also served as chairman of the Association’s survey committee.
