South Carolina counted at lease 15 weekend violent deaths.
Lawton R. Ursrey, 55 of Hazelhurt, Ga., was shot to death during an argument with a brother-in-law at McBee. The brother-in-law, James C. Johnson, 56, was hospitalized in critical condition.
Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Chestnut of Surfside Beach suffocated in a fire that started late at night in the kitchen of their home.
University of South Carolina coed Frances Ann Hess, 19, drowned when she was swept from rocks in the middle of the Saluda Rivers rapids near Columbia.
She and three companions were sunning on the rocks when a surge of water released from an upstream dam swept them into the current. The other three reached safety.
Andrew Preston Titus, in his early 20’s, was shot to death at a Columbia cafe early Sunday morning following an argument. Police arrested Hattie R. Stokes, 27, in connection with the incident.
Linda Bonnie Kave, 19 of Barnwell, and her cousin Thomas Burnett Gray, 13, of Allendale died when the car in which they were riding hit a tree four miles west of Barnwell.
Charles Clark Rape, 29, of Rt. 3, Lancaster, was killed when his car wrecked on a rural road about six miles east of Lancaster.
A Rt. 2 Gaston Man, Joseph English, died Saturday of injuries received when he was hit by a truck on the Charleston Highway.
Earl T. Sanders of Columbia was killed in a two-car collision Sunday afternoon in Cayce.
Traffic accidents also took the lives of Henry Walton Jones Jr., 22, of Greenville; Louis Johnson, 60, of Berkeley County; Francis Gorman McKinney, 35, of Jackson; Richard Beaudrot, 30, of St, George: and Daniel Cornelin Harrelson Jr., 50-year-old resident of Tabor City, N. C.
