BLANEY ELEMENTARY

Oprah’s Book Club made a surprise visit to Blaney Elementary in February in celebration of black history month. Oprah, seen here with students Ashlyn Brown, interviewed children’s author Donald Crews about his many children’s books. Crews, help by student Chase Brown, assured Oprah that everything he wrote in his books was truthful. This was a great relief to Blaney’s students, (kneeling), Anna Coffman, Robert Storey, Alena Fry, and Sterling Eisiminger. Students were challenge to thoroughly study famous African-Americans and may cut out figure of their chosen person. Arctic explorer (seen here) Matthew Henson, as well as Whoopi Goldberg, Wilma Rudolph, Muhammad Ali and Florence Griffith-Joyner, also made guest appearances on the show.
