Carolina, Winthrop and Clemson Awards Made Public Yesterday.

Awards of 216 state scholarships in three institutions- University of South Carolina, Winthrop and Clemson colleges – were announced yesterday by the state board of education, which also said that the awards for the Citadel would be announced probably within the next ten days.

The board met in the offices of Governor John G. Richards, who returned for the day from Liberty Hill to attend the session, and after hearing and appeal by a trustee of the New Bethel school district in Lancaster County the matter of the scholarship awards was taken up.

The university awards are 29 holdover scholarships, 11 new ones and three one year at-large appointments. As complete information was not available from Aiken, Charleston and Marion counties, no awards for them were announced but will be within the near future.

At Winthrop, there are 83 holdover awards, 40 new ones and one from the state at large.

For Clemson there are 48 new scholarships, 11 appointments from the state at large and 30 holdovers.

The complete list of scholarship awards is given below.

In the matter of the appeal the state board, after hearing the case presented by both sides, asked for the resignation of the entire board as now composed for New Bethel and requested the county board of Lancaster county to immediately appoint a new board fro the school. The case involved one trustee who had been asked to resign by the county board and had appealed to the state board that he be allowed to keep his office.
