Kershaw County Legislator Not Press Charges in Campaign
(Special to The Record)
CAMDEN, S. C. Aug. 21 – Newton Kelly, Kershaw county candidate to the house of representatives, formally withdrew his pre-campaign charges against the state highway department yesterday when he declared from the stump at Blaney that “I am not fighting the highway department at present. We’ve got them where we want them and I am willing to let them alone.”
Mr. Kelly is seeking re-election. His views before the opening of the county campaign here, as related to the highway department, were recently made public when a letter of his was published. The letter declared that, “I want to say right here that we do not need the highway department and if there is not some changes made we will not have them a great while longer.
“Go to the state building in the city of Columbia.” the recent indictment of Mr. Kelly continues, “and see that large force of hands are getting large salaries. This bunch of mistletoe is sapping the financial blood of the state.”
