Larry D. Cunningham was born in the family home in Wateree Township in Kershaw County, SC on February 7, 1947. Larry quietly and peacefully answered the Master’s call to eternal life on Monday, October 4, 2021. He was the only son of the late Fred Cunningham and Inez Wood Cunningham.
Larry attended Wateree Elementary School in Lugoff, SC and he graduated from Jackson High School in Camden, South Carolina in 1964. He furthered his education and obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He was a proud “Aggie.”
Following graduation in 1969, Larry moved to Washington, DC and found employment with the Federal government. Larry began his career with the Department of the Navy at the Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland. Two years later he
transferred to the Department of the Army. At the end of his 36 plus year career, he was employed as a Commodities Specialist at the U. S. Department of Interior at the U. S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia.
Larry was baptized in his youth and became a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church where he was encouraged by his mother and the elder church sisters to join the choir. Although he became a life member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church as a child, he accompanied his parents to numerous churches in the Lugoff-Camden area where
he met and made many friends.
Although Larry was an only child, he was blessed to be surrounded by many cousins. Later in life he reminisced that the only time he felt like an only child was at bedtime. Larry will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends, his friendship to young and old alike. Called “The Boss,” a nickname given by his Aunt Margaret, his mother’s oldest sister, Larry was a pragmatic, well organized, no-frills, no-nonsense person who possessed the ability to quickly size up situations and come to a solution. He never hesitated to provide, in very strong, frank language, his version of sage counsel when he felt it necessary. He also was known for his kindness and generosity, his compassion and understanding.
He enjoyed tending to his yard and provided advice and assistance to his neighbors as well. He planted flowers and grew tomatoes and hot peppers. Larry read several newspapers daily, and, like his father, especially loved reading the comics. He was an avid
sports fan and watched football, basketball, and NASCAR races. He enjoyed shopping and running daily errands, eating, and dining out. He also could cook and learned to make perfect omelets and crepes. Larry loved music and singing. He enjoyed watching all westerns and but also spent time in quiet reflection.
Celebrating his eternal life are his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Jacqueline M. Harris; his sister, Pauline (Richard) Hopkins of Newport News, VA. He also leaves to cherish his memory special aunts, Nancy Harris Howerton of Huntingdon, PA and
Doris Mason Pope of Philadelphia, PA; sisters-in-law, Anna F. Harris of Huntingdon, PA, Lori E. Harris of Philadelphia, PA; brothers-in-law, Milton E. Harris of Philadelphia, PA, Andrew M. Harris of Howard, PA, Benjamin F. Harris of Huntingdon, PA,
and Charles T. Payne of Woodbridge, VA; special sisters-in-love, Marlene L. Purvis, Phylis C. Alford, Linda S. Cunningham, Shirley Peay Hawkins, and Sheila W. Bracey; goddaughters, Monica Harris, Tiffany Simons, and Jessica Banks Vann; numerous nieces, nephews,
