Summerville High School is providing fans the opportunity to see a team from a college wrestling power conference and two well-established high school programs in action at the same venue.
The Green Wave will host the 2022 Lowcountry Brawl in the school’s main gym on Nov. 12. Wrestling is scheduled to begin with Summerville facing off against Lugoff-Elgin at 2 p.m. The main event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. when Presbyterian College will take on Michigan State University.
“This is huge for the Lowcountry, which has some great high school wrestling teams and several active youth wrestling programs,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “I definitely look for it to sell out.”
Tucker said the event should be exciting for any wrestling fan.
“You don’t want to miss it,” he said. “There may never be another chance to have a team from the Big 10 wrestle this close again. The Big Ten is the power conference when it comes to college wrestling. Michigan State doesn’t get mentioned an awful lot because Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State are normally ranked really high. However, Michigan State has some highly ranked wrestlers and we are happy to be able to host this kind event in our gym.”
The warm-up match should also be exciting. Summerville has 12 wrestling state championships while Lugoff-Elgin has six.
Summerville advanced all the way to the Class AAAAA Lower State championship match last season but was denied the opportunity to wrestle for a state title by Ashley Ridge, which went on to win the state championship. Lugoff-Elgin advanced all the way to the Class AAAA Lower State championship match in 2022 but was eliminated by Eastside, which went on to win the 4A state championship.
Tickets for the Lowcountry Brawl can be purchased for $10 each through the school’s athletic department website, www.summervilleathletics.com. Look for the link to www.eventbrite.com. For an additional $2 donation fans can have their name added for a chance to win an OONI Outdoor Pizza Oven.
The Low Country Brawl was established last year to promote the sport of wrestling. The 2021 event took place on John McKissick Field with eight high schools (Summerville, Goose Creek, Hilton Head, Chapin, Rock Hill, Eastside, Socastee and Lugoff Elgin) plus three colleges (The Citadel, Presbyterian and Limestone) participating.
