Obituary of Rev. George E. Hughes

CASSATT- A funeral service for Rev. George Edward Hughes, 90, will be held Friday, April 5, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Ray Stevens Family Cemetery. The Rev. Chris Brissey will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornerstone Church of God of Prophecy.

    Pastor George, husband of the late Jessie Ruth Anderson, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2024. Born in Colleton County, S.C., he was a son of the late Brodus and Ethel Bennett Hughes. Pastor George retired from the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. After retiring he became an ordained minister. Pastor George was a member of Cornerstone Church of God of Prophecy and the Disabled Veterans Commander Club. He enjoyed watching westerns, especially Gunsmoke, Jimmy Swaggert, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

    Surviving are his daughter, Connie Hughes of Cassatt; grandchildren, Samantha Jade Gumm (Zain), Misty Graham (Tim), Ashley Lyles, James Dent; sister, Pauline Holt of Monks Corner; and 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by children, Edward Lee Hughes, Melissa Nichols; and a granddaughter, Jessica Croft.
