Obituary of Marion Guy Burley
LUGOFF- Marion Guy Burley, 91, was born January 18, 1933, at his home in Monticello, S.C. and was the son of the late William “Bill” David and Edith Funchess Burley. He died April 6, 2024.
Marion was a 1951 graduate of McClenaghan High School in Florence SC. He was in the South Carolina National Guard in Florence in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. In October 2001, he retired from Financial Development Corp. and was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gretchen Steele Burley. They met on a blind date, September 1958 and married June 5, 1959, before she graduated from Columbia High that night. He was an avid deer hunter and a devoted Clemson fan. Children are Ronnie Burley (Sandra) and Carol Elaine Burley Hanna from a previous marriage. His and Gretchen’s children are Samuel David Burley and Lisa Anne Burley Eddings; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded by brothers, Hugh, Clyde, William “Poodoo”, Marvin; and sister, Elizabeth “Sis” B. Fetner.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 2 pm at Monticello United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ben Rogers will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
