Recently the state’s youngest probate judge was listed as in his late 20’s but a survey today reveals that the honor rests with 22-year-old- A. R. (Pete) Murray, the judge of probate for Berkeley county.
Judge Murray, who will not be 23 until June, is a World War II veteran, who served three years in Uncle Sam’s Army.
He entered the Army in 1943 as a private and in his wartime service spent 22 months overseas. He returned home with the rank of master sergeant, in 1946.
Judge Murray served with the 272nd Field Artillery Battalion under command of Lt. Col. Wallace W. Wade. Colonel Wade now serves a football coach at Duke university, the same coaching position he held prior to entering the service.
Judge Murray in addition to being the youngest judge in the state is probably the youngest holder of a major county office.
The young Moncks Corner resident is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Horace T. Jacobs (Clara Mae Jacobs)
Judge Murray is married, Mrs. Murray being the former Miss Mary Theo Barnett, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Barnett of Russelville. A graduate nurse, she finished nurse’s training at Tri-County hospital in Orangeburg and worked until the past year as a nurse at the Berkeley County hospital.
