Obituary for Mrs. Jane Beckham Marchant

Jane Beckham Marchant, 93, formerly of Columbia, SC, passed away on July 2, 2024. Born on November 15, 1930, Jane was the daughter of the late Claude Sherrill Beckham and the late Margaret Crenshaw Beckham.

Jane graduated from Columbia High School, attended the University of South Carolina, and graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Accounting. She married John Ogg Nates, and together in 1955, they established John Nates Druggist, and later John Nates Pharmacy, which they ran until he died in 1975. She continued to own and manage the pharmacy until she sold it in 1979. In 1978 she married Julian Milledge Marchant, and together they enjoyed 29 years of fun and laughter until his death.

Jane was a charter member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in Columbia, where she was president of the Women of the Church, taught 7th grade Sunday School for 12 years, and led Girl Scouts for 12 years. She was a charter member of the Chapel at Lake Wateree where she was an Elder and taught adult Sunday School. Later, as a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, she facilitated numerous Bible studies. She was a member of the Petal Pushers Garden Club and served as President. She served as President of the Woman’s Club of Columbia for 2 years and as Treasurer for 24 years. She was also a member of Belle’s Letters Book Club. Jane was an avid Gamecock fan and enjoyed spending time with family, playing bridge, gardening, and reading.

Survivors include her daughter, Becky Nates Payne of Fort Mill, SC; son, John Bryan Nates and his wife, Becky of Elgin, SC; stepdaughter, Karen Marchant Cooper and her husband, Dr. John A. Cooper of Greenville, SC; son in law, Thomas M. Painter of Chapin, SC; son in law, Rev. Father Eddie Martin of Baton Rouge, LA; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was predeceased by daughters, Sherrill Nates Painter and Jennifer Nates Martin; son in law, The Rev. Kim S. Payne; brother, Claude C. Beckham; and granddaughter, Marguerite (Maggie) Martin.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2:00 o’clock,on Monday, July 8, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Columbia. The family will receive friends in the Parlor immediately following the service. Follow the live stream at www.flpc.org.
