Donald Sills Obituary
Donald “Don” Jerome Sills passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025. Born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Cecil A. Sills and Netta Covington Sills.
Don lived in many states, but Bluffton, SC was his home the majority of his life. He returned to Camden to take care of his mother until her passing. He was employed at Sea Pines Golf Resort in Hilton Head and at the Camden Country Club. After golf course employment, he attended truck driving school and was employed by McElroy Truck Lines for a short time, then decided retirement would best suit him. Don was an accomplished musician, especially piano. He loved old rock, the group Genesis, and later in life became quite fond of bluegrass music. He was a good cook, and sharing his recipes and meals brought him great joy, especially his low-country boil and rum cake. Don always said that a good sip of moonshine was the best medicine for your ailments.
After acquiring his pilot’s license, Don enjoyed piloting small aircraft, especially his Ultralite glider. He had a passion for cars and motorcycles and would get so excited to win a trophy at a local car show. A favorite pastime of Don’s was tinkering on small engines, and he also loved to tell story after story about his travels, with Alaska being his favorite.
To mention Don, was to mention any of his pet chihuahuas. He had many in his lifetime, and they were everything to him. Everyone from the neighborhood bank teller, restaurant and pharmacy drive-thrus, knew Don and his fur-babies. As a man of faith, Don was very knowledgeable of the Bible and was eager to meet Jesus when he learned of his diagnosis.
Don is survived by his relatives, Charles Covington, Jan Covington Rogers (Doug), Pam Covington Baker-Sasser (Jim), Karen Foster Baker (Bob), Julie Foster Williamson (Ken); nieces, Lisa Feix and Tabitha Riggs of Florida; numerous cousins; and special friends, Vickie Moody and Scott Hill.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his brother, Cecil “Del” Sills.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Vickie Moody and Scott Hill who were such a blessing to Don and the family for their unwavering love and care. They graciously gave of their time taking him to appointments, grocery shopping, or whatever he needed. They were there through very difficult times and we are truly grateful.
The family would also like to thank Agape Hospice and Pinedale Residential Center for their care of and blessings to Don for the last three months of his life.
Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is assisting the family.
