Kenneth R. Ditzler

WEST COLUMBIA – Kenneth R. Ditzler, 82, died on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, in Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital. Born in Northumberland, PA, January 21, 1928, Mr. Ditzler was the ninth of 11 children of the late Harry R. and Gertrude Synder Ditzler.

After service in the U.S. Army in Japan at the end of World War II, Mr. Ditzler moved from Williamsport, PA, to Aiken, where he was employed by Colonial Stores as a meat cutter. Through the years, he advanced to store manager in Charlotte, NC, and was then promoted to meat merchandiser in 1968 and worked out of Columbia, SC, until 1983.

Kenneth was a longtime member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where he was active in Sunday School and served on Church Council. During his retirement at Lake Wateree, Ken joined the Chapel at Lake Wateree where he served as a deacon. He was also active in the Wateree Home Owners Association and the local VFW post. Hobbies included painting, fishing, gardening and square-dancing.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Emily Sonder Ditzler; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Dan Russell of West Columbia; daughter, Susan Bennett of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Rusty and Lauren Cosby Ditzler of Elgin; grandchildren, David Russell of Lexington, Amy Russell of Charleston, Rachel Ditzler of Fort Mill, and Andrew Ditzler of Elgin; great-grandchildren, Regan, Nathan and Amber Russell; brothers and sister-in-law, Jesse L. Ditzler of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Robert and Doris Ditzler of Muncy, PA, and sisters and brotherin-law, Ethel Gemberling of Towson, MD, Sara Hess of Laport, PA, and Nancy and Jerry Hull of Covington, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harry F. and Richard Ditzler, and sisters, Mildred Newton, Marguerite Lindauer and Edith Metz.

A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 7239 Patterson Road, Columbia, SC, on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ken may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 90961, Columbia, SC 29290. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
