S.C. Lists 12 Deaths By Violence

At least 12 persons died violently in South Carolina during the weekend, a United Press International survey showed today.

The survey counted five traffic deaths. Two persons accidentally asphyxiated, two fatally shot, one accidentally hanged, one stabbed to death, and one fatally bludgeoned.

Calvin Keith Pickens, 32, of New Ellenton, was killed when his automobile wrecked at New Ellenton.

A 40-year-old Negro woman, Irene Nelson – was killed by an automobile as she crossed a Columbia street.

Joe Graham, a 49-year-old Lake City Negro, was killed when automobile ran into a ditch on Highway 21-59 one mile from Lake City in Florence County.

Mrs. Fannie Pace Henderson, 43, of Gaffney, was killed when she was thrown from her automobile and dragged when she attempted to drive the car away from her home.

A 74-year-old Dillon County man -Miller Smith – was killed in a two car collision 12 miles west of Dillon.

A 17-year-old Marine private on leave from Camp Lejeune, N. C., and a woman asphyxiated in a motel room at Johnsons Crossroads in Aiken County. The victims were identified as Donald B. Davis of New Ellenton and Miss. Katherine Herron of Augusta, Ga.

Coly Davis, a 22-year-old Negro from near Bennettsville, was shot to death. Police arrested another Negro, Coleman Ellerbee, in connection with the case.

Jane Mae Smith, a 28-year-old Walterboro Negro woman, was killed by a shotgun blast and officers were holding Grant Faser, 59, in the case.

Columbia police were holding a Negro woman in connection with the fatal stabbing of George Culler, a 38-year-old Negro.

Columbia ofticers were questioning a male suspect in the bludgeon death of Eva Mae Moore, 47-year-old Negro woman whose body was found on a street.

An 11-year-old Horry County boy – Isaac Galloway – accidentally hanged himself when he fell from a fence while playing with a rope attached to a tree and around his neck.
