Highlights from Week 2 of high school football playoffs

t’s the second week of the playoffs for high school football in South Carolina.

Here is a look at some of the top matchups, players to watch and predictions for SC High School League and SC Independent Schools Association high school football playoffs.

SCISA 4A

Heathwood (8-3) at Hammond (9-1)

Players to Watch – HW: QB Patrick Belk, LB Julian Hughes; H: TE/LB Jackson Ross; DE Hugh Manning

Notes: Winner of game advances to next week’s SCISA 4A championship game on Nov. 21 at South Carolina State. Second meeting of the season between two teams. Hammond won, 9-7, on Sept. 12 as Jackson Ross hit a 36-yard field goal with 11 seconds left. The Skyhawks have won 20 straight over Heathwood. The Highlanders’ last win over Hammond came on Oct. 23, 2009. Heathwood is looking for its first nine-win season since 2009, which is the last time it played for a SCISA state championship. Hammond’s defense has 49 sacks this season, led by John Stokes’ 13 and Hugh Manning’s 11. Heathwood QB Patrick Belk needs 61 yards for 2,000 yards passing this season. Belk has 25 total TDs this year.

Class 5A

Boiling Springs (5-6) at Dutch Fork (8-1)

Players to Watch – BS: LB TJ Collins, DB Tyvion Hall; DF: DE Julian Walker, DE Jaden Wuerth

Notes: Second round game in 5A Division I Upper State playoffs with the winner facing the Byrnes-Rock Hill winner next week. Dutch Fork had a bye in the first round while Boiling Springs beat Mauldin, 16-14. Third straight year two teams have met in the playoffs. Dutch Fork won 42-14 last year and is 8-1 all-time against Boiling Springs. Stone Furrey leads Dutch Fork with 34 catches for 654 yards and five touchdowns. Jaden Wuerth leads DF with 10 sacks. TJ Collins leads Boiling Springs with 91 tackles and is second on the team with five sacks.

Spartanburg (7-4) at Ridge View (7-3)

Players to Watch – S: QB Trey Burke, RB Trenton Lynch; RV: WR Khristian Jackson, DB Jordyn Best

Notes: Second round game in 5A Division II Upper State playoffs. RV had a bye last week and Spartanburg defeated JL Mann, 45-3. The winner gets the Dorman-Blythewood winner next week. Second meeting between the two teams. Spartanburg won 32-29 in the 2021 playoffs. Spartanburg RB Trenton Lynch returned to action last week after being out for about a month and rushed for 124 yards and two TDs vs. JL Mann. Lynch has rushed for 1,204 yards and 12 TDs. Spartanburg QB Trey Burke is an East Carolina commit. Quency Grant leads RV with four interceptions. Ridge View RB Spencer Bobian has rushed for 1,147 yards and 17 TDs.

Lugoff-Elgin (6-5) at Irmo (9-1)

Players to Watch – LE: WR Shamil Saadiq, WR EJ Richardson; I: DE Jaden Bryant, WR Maleek Miller

Notes: Second round game in 5A Division II Lower State playoffs. Irmo had a bye last week while L-E defeated Socastee, 42-6. The winner faces the Lucy Beckham-White Knoll winner next week. Irmo leads the all-time series, 8-1 and won the last meeting between the two teams in 2023 (49-0). Lugoff-Elgin has won six games in a season for the first time since 2017, which was the last time it won a playoff game. LE’s EJ Richardson is 20 yards shy of 2,000 all-purpose yards on the season. Shamil Saadiq leads L-E with 68 catches for 1,131 yards and eight TDs. The Yellow Jackets are looking to win 10 games in a season for the third straight year, the first time that has happened since 2002-04.

Class 4A

AC Flora (10-1) at Seneca (10-1)

Players to Watch – ACF QB Roper Wentzky, WR/DB Blake Betette; S RB Amari Verner, QB Gavin Thomas

Notes: Second round game in the 4A Upper State playoff. AC Flora defeated York, 42-12, while Seneca defeated Lancaster, 28-21, last week. First meeting between the two teams. AC Flora is looking for its first road playoff win since defeating South Pointe in 2020. AC Flora QB Roper Wentzky has thrown for 2,711 yards and 29 TDs. Flora RB Jaylin Simmons needs 99 yards for 1,000 rushing yards on the season. AC Flora defensive back Azal Banag, who leads the team with five interceptions, picked up an offer from Oregon on Wednesday. Nasir Walker and Peyton Bishop lead the AC Flora defense in tackles and sacks. Seneca’s RB Amari Verner has rushed for 1,849 yards and 22 TDs. QB Gavin Thomas leads Seneca with 2,429 yards passing and 37 TDs.

Camden (8-3) at Daniel (10-1)

Players to Watch – C: WR/DB Tylin Drakeford, QB Greyson Rimpf; D: QB Jace Grass, WR Trey Wimbley

Notes: Second round game in the Class 4A Upper State playoffs. The winner faces the Wren-Westside winner next week. Camden defeated Greer, 38-20, while Daniel survived an upset from 15th-seeded Dreher, 14-10. Two teams met in the state championship in 2020, 2021 and 2023 with Daniel winning all three games and the Lions leading the all-time series, 8-1. Camden QB Greyson Rimpf went over 2,000 yards passing and RB Navier Boykin eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark last week. Tyler Edwards leads Camden in sacks (5), QB pressures (11) and tackles for loss (15). Daniel QB Jace Grass has thrown for 2,727 yards and 30 TDs. Trey Wimbley is the Lions’ top receiver with 53 catches for 1,050 yards and 13 TDs.

Class 3A

Hanahan (6-5) at Newberry (11-0)

Players to Watch – H: RB Isaiah Snodgrass, N: QB Kenton Caldwell, WR Jamere Crooks

Notes: Second round game in Class 3A Lower State playoffs. Hanahan defeated Waccamaw, 38-21 and Newberry defeated Aynor, 54-14, last week. The winner of the game faces the Orangeburg-Wilkinson-Loris winner next week. First meeting between the two schools. Newberry is looking for its first 12-win season since 2015 and hasn’t won a second-round home playoff game since 2016.
